Cubs Re-Sign Jason Hammel

Posted on

The Cubs today re-signed right handed starting pitcher Jason Hammel to a 2 year $18 million deal with a third year $12 million option or a $2 million buyout. I didn’t think he would be signed first but it gives the Cubs some breathing room in the Lester negotiations and beyond. I imagine that since I am at a conference, Lester will sign somewhere tomorrow, knowing my luck.

Right now, Hammel slides into the two hole in the Cubs rotation. I would like it better if he were the three or four.

Hammel loved it in Chicago and had great success working with pitching coach Chris Bosio.Hammel was 8 – 5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Cubs. I think he can replicate his success by focusing on what he does well. Rather than throwing the kitchen sink up there Bosio had Hammel focus on 2-3 pitches. I see Hammel getting back to that.

Let’s hope this is just the beginning.

I agree, Jason Hammel was a decent signing, About a #3 or #4 pitcher. They still need a pitcher that is better than Hammel.
