The weather today is a little brisk. It’s cool, in the 50s and there’s a hint of rain in the air, and it even smells wet (like Ron Santo used to say). It will be a little more brisk by the lake tonight as the Cubs begin a three games series against division rival Milwaukee. Temps are expected to drop into the 40s by game time.

Tomorrow’s weather does not look good to get a game in as thunderstorms are predicted all day. With that in mind, here are the matchups that will be indicative of how this series goes when they do play.

Game One – 7:05 p.m.
Nelson (3-1, 3.46 ERA) vs. Hendricks (1-2, 4.00)

Advantage – Cubs

Milwaukee has been scoring runs. With Ryan Braun and Chris Carter each with 5 HRs, don’t think this series will be a pushover. Jimmy Nelson will be on the mound for Milwaukee giving them their best to chance to win the series.

Game Two – 7:05 p.m.
Jungmann (0-3, 8.47) vs. Arrieta (4-0, 0.87)

Advantage – Cubs

Likely, this game will be rained out. After throwing a no hitter last time out, Jake Arrieta could use another day, but he doesn’t need one.

Game Three – 1:20 p.m.
Davies (0-2, 9.47) vs Lester (2-1, 1.98)

Advantage – Cubs

When Thursday rolls around, getaway day could be a blowout if 23 year old righty Zach Davies has to face a Cubs’ lineup filled with righties. Davies has a 13+ ERA against right handed hitters this season..

What does Milwaukee have this year?
With Braun, LuCroy, and Carter in the middle of the lineup, this team is not as bad as one might have thought going into the year. Also, outfielder Domingo Santana has been doing very well hitting .275 with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs. Other than that, that’s about it. The middle part of the lineup can drive in some runs. The problem is, only Scooter Gennet is the only one getting on base.

Modus Operandi for this series:

  • Same as usual – hitters work deep counts, Cub pitchers throw strikes. These are never going to change.
  • Keep Braun and Lucroy off base – they have been the Cub killers the past few years
  • Take game one and a sweep seems likely.
  • Keep Javy Baez in lineup somehow
  • Get Zobrist on track
  • Keep Jorge Soler buttoned up and warm
