Weekly News and Awards: It Is All About the Winning

Posted on

I woke up this morning to find five of the Cubs minor league affiliates in first place!

Tennessee – The Smokies are 6-3 this half including 5-1 this week. They are getting great sarting pitching, a good bullpen and timely hitting to get off to a great second half start.

South Bend – At 8-2, The Cubs only seem to give up one run a night. Last night, it was Kyle Miller who struck out 7 in 6 innings and allowed one run. Preston Morrison and Ryan Kellogg were also outstanding this week along with Carson Sands.

Eugene – They already have a 5 game lead in their division after 16 games of a 37 game first half. At 12-4, the Ems are taking it to their opponents with quality starting pitching and their great hitting and speed.

Arizona – These young Cubs are in first due to their starting pitching.  The Cubs are tied with the Athletics at 6-4 in their division.

DSL 2 – This team has pitching for days. At 16-8, they seem to be cruising.

Weekly Awards

Pitcher of the Week – Jesus Castillo wrapped this up on Monday when he struck out 11 for Eugene. Using a wicked curve, the 20 year old was just vicious en route to a victory over Spokane!

Reliever of the Week – Eugenio Palma of Arizona was outstanding on the 28th going four scoreless and picking up the win.

Hitter of the Week – Isn Happ is making mincemeat out of Southern League pitchers. Happ has lead a resurgence for the Smokies in the second half with his bat. In just ten games at AA,  he is hitting .478.

Team of the Week – The Smokies get it done at 5-1 this week. Also, Duane Underwood had his best start of the year by far going 6 IP with an unearned run.
