In an unrelated move, the Cubs promoted pitcher Preston Morrison from South Bend to Myrtle Beach. He’s been unstoppable the last two months at South Bend with ERAs of 0.79 and 0.49. For the year, he has a 2.24 ERA. His fortunes changed this year when he moved from the first-base side of the rubber to the third-base side. He was named the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, and he likely has a very good shot at winning the award for July.
Morrison will replace Zach Hedges in the Pelican’s rotation. Hedges was promoted to Tennessee this weekend. I will miss Morrison at South Bend. He’s one of my favorite prospects to watch play.
Morrison has a nice four-pitch repertoire that comes from a deceptive arm slot. He gets a lot of movement on his pitches and some very ugly swings against.
South Bend will likely replace Morrison in the rotation with Jose Paulino who was recently promoted from Eugene.
