The Cubs acquired reliever Joe Smith, who is deadly against righties, from the Angels today in exchange for young starter Jesus Castillo. Castillo pitched at Eugene and had a nice FB, CB, and CH but struggled with control.
Smith is known for pitching from a 1/2 arm slot, almost submarine style. This year, he was 1-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 38 games. For his career, Smith has a 40-27 record with a 2.94 ERA in 623 games. He is 32-year-olds.
Smith gives Manager Joe Maddon another option in innings 6-7.
Trivia – Castillo was 1/2 of the Tony Campana trade.
