Sunday Notes and Weekly Awards: The Pitching Fired on All Cylinders This Week

Posted on Updated on

Things are slowing down. There are just four weeks of minor league baseball left as the minor league season ends September 5. I have four more days of freedom left before I start back to work on Friday mentoring new teachers and then the kids come on the 17th. As a result, the number of posts will start dropping from every day to 4-5 times a week.

It was such a fast summer. I am starting to miss it even though it hasn’t ended.

Still, this week was hopping!

clifton 59 2016 mbMyrtle Beach is on a big roll! They have won seven in a row and now have a 2.5 game lead for first place and 7 game lead for the wild card. Their magic number to get in the playoffs stands at 21. They have been getting big performances from Charcer Burks, Daniel Spingola, Yasiel Balaguert, and Andrew Ely. In addition, Ian Rice came off the DL last night. Closer Ryan McNeil seems almost invincible and could be staking a claim for the reliever of the year.

Iowa’s Mark Zagunis has a broken bone in his foot and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

There were several great pitching performances this week. It was hard to pick a winner this week!
*Trevor Clifton took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before giving up a double.
*Preston Morrison took one into the sixth.
*Oscar de la Cruz made his home debut for South Bend and struck out nine in 5 innings.
*Zach Hedges pitched 7 shutout innings in his second game for Tennessee.
*Jose Paulino looked very good this week, too. In his second game for South Bend, he went 7 IP while allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 with two walks.
*And, Manny Rondon pitched 5 scoreless with 7 Ks last night for Eugene.

Other Notes

Kyle Twomey returned from the DL and went back to the bullpen. He has been dominating hitters there this year. He’s gone 21.1 IP with 35 Ks and allowing only 2 ERs for a  0.84 ERA!

Carson Sands came off the DL as well. His first appearance saw him get the save. Last night, he was responsible for three runs in just two innings.

Zack Short continues to impress me with his bat. After getting off to a rough start at Eugene, his average has climbed from .233 to .308. He also cranked his first HR this week for the short season affiliate.

Chesny Young in August is starting to look like Chesny Young in April. In his last ten games, the utility player is bringing it a .386 clip with an OBP of .438!

Darryl Wilson is on fire. Even the Northwest League All-Star Break could not slow him down. His average has shot from .153 to .253 in two weeks. It is an impressive stretch!

Eddy Martinez continues to be on a RBI run. He has 26 in his last 31 games. He is closing in on Eloy for the team lead. This week, he even moved to the leadoff spot for a coupel of games and continued to drive in runs.

South of the Border

Hector Garcia and Alfredo Colorado, both in the Dominican Summer League, each struck out ten batters in back-to-back days.  In addition, Faustino Carrera continues to be brilliant every start with an ERA of under 1.
