The Chicago Cubs announced today that their roster was now at 25 players. Surprisingly, the final two changes were different than what most writers thought would happen. Instead of the final roster spot coming down to Matt Szczur and Tommy La Stella, both players made the club as relief pitcher Brian Duensing was placed on the DL, and, as expected, catcher Carlos Corporan was sent to AAA Iowa.
For now, this temporarily places the Szczur/La Stella conundrum on hold. When Duensing is ready, or April nears an end, the Cubs management will have to decide when to expand the bullpen to 13 for May (with Duensing or another pitcher), release Szczur, option La Stella, or bring up another utility player in their stead, like Ian Happ or Chesny Young.
Anything could happen over the next five weeks.
