By Todd Johnson
New faces dotted new places throughout the Cubs system this week. Pierce Johnson debuted in a thunderstorm while Jason Heyward was spotted in South Bend on a rehab stint. Jeimer Candelario and Tommy La Stella were sent back to AAA Iowa. Promotions were aplenty as Craig Brooks moved to Tennessee, Michael Rucker to Myrtle Beach, and Tyler Peyton, Michael Knighton, and Michael Cruz flew from extended spring trading to South Bend. It looks like Pierce Johnson will head back to Iowa today.
Eloy Jimenez made his 2017 debut for Myrtle Beach. For the week, he hit .320 with 2 HR and 5 RBIs in 7 games. He was walked 5 times which put his OBP at .433 heading into Sunday.
The one person who did not move was Ian Happ. The switch hitting utility player may have found a home in Chicago. He hit .333 with an OBP of .462 in addition to 2 HRs and 4 RBIs in his week of work. I think Joe Maddon has taken a shine to Mr. Happ. This is, after all, is a game of performance.
Every time I watch Zack Short play, I come away impressed by what a great ballplayer he is. He can hit for average and power, and is an excellent baserunner. Even though he has not been promoted yet, I think it’s only a matter of time before he will be the first position player to head to Myrtle Beach this season.
Only two weeks remain until the draft. I will have my yearly draft grades post out on Tuesday. Today, over at BP Wrigleyville, I wrote an article just on the 2016 class.
I will be done teaching school on Tuesday. Look for more daily content. I am looking forward to a few key storylines in Chicago:
- Ian Happ
- Will Eddie Butler continue to start?
- The acquisition of more starting pitching
- Bench Roles – What will Almora do?
- Which Prospect is Next?
