Winning 17 out of their last 21 games, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans clinched a spot in the Carolina League Playoffs. As a result, the Pelicans will have a chance to win their third consecutive Mills Cup Championship!
The Pelicans have won 39 and lost 26 this half and were mired in a .500 phase for most of April and May. Then all three phases of the game clicked. Starting pitchers Thomas Hatch, Adbert Alzolay, Justin Steele, Ryan Kellogg, and Michael Rucker dominated hitters in the 21 game stretch. Hatch has not allowed a run all June and Rucker has only allowed one. Kellogg and Steele both have ERAs under 3 for the month and Alzolay has been sizzling striking out 22 in 17 IP.
The hitting has been timely as Eloy Jimenez, Bryant Flete, Daniel Spingola, PJ Higgins, and Jesse Hodges have been anchoring the heart of the order.
The bullpen has been amazing. Pedro Araujo took over the closer’s role when Dillon Maples was promoted to Tennessee and lefty Jordan Minch’s return has been a boost to the team.
The Pelicans close out the first half this Sunday. The Carolina League/California League All-Star Game is Tuesday and the second half begins next Thursday.
With a title and a playoff spot, expect to see some promotions in the next week.
