Day Two Preview: A Lot Ins, Outs, What Have Yous…

By Todd Johnson

Day two of the draft finds the Cubs making eight selections in rounds three through ten. The Cubs will make the 20th pick in the third round and the 24th pick in every room there after, starting at 128.

I will start live blogging about noon and the Cubs should make their first pick around 12:20 pm.

Each round should take about a half an hour leaving me plenty of time to get a profile and a card made. I already have a photo album started on the Facebook page and I’ll be adding to it as the day goes on.

What to Look for on Day Two

There are a lot of big names left like Cole Wilcox and Kumar Rocker, Blaine Knight, Mike Siani, and Tristan Beck.

The most common strategy is to pick up a few more well-known players in the third through fifth rounds. For college seniors, they become the order of the day in rounds 8 to 10.

Two players I would like to see the Cubs take today are catcher Nick Gatewood from Georgia state and senior David Lebron from the University of Tampa.

I love Gatewood’s hitting profile and his massive forearms. I don’t know he’ll stick a catcher, but the bat plays pretty much anywhere.

As for Lebron, he has a way of missing bats and a lot of them. I could see him in a relief role or as a starter. But his biggest asset is he is excellent at commanding three pitches for strikes.

It’ll be interesting to see who the Cubs get.
