Prospect Interview – Hunter Bigge Has a Lot Going On

Yesterday, I profiled Hunter Bigge, who is not really a sleeper prospect anymore. Throwing a fastball in the mid to upper 90s, Bigge has put himself in the news with what he can do on the mound. On Saturday afternoon, I was able to sit down and talk to Hunter on the phone about a myriad of topics, including his future role as a Cub and if he’s going to hit any more bombs.

It doesn’t take long to realize that Hunter Bigge is an engaging personality with a lot to talk about. Whether it’s his career path, the learning process, or the future, he’s got something to say.

Here are a few things I took away from the conversation.
Image1. He really perked up when talking about getting tips from Kohl Franklin and Michael McAvene. I wonder how those “tips” will impact his game the rest of this month and into next year?
2. I’d like to think that deep down he wants to be a starter. Yet, I believe him when he says he doesn’t care. While that might be something straight out of “Bull Durham,” it could be true in BIgge’s case.
3. While this year is basically Bigge dipping his toes in the water (for both him and the Cubs), next year could bring about a somewhat different pitcher. Between instructs in February and spring training, which is now immediately after instructs, Bigge and the Cubs could make some changes that might be impactful on what he throws. That might include incorporating some of the tips he mentioned and ones he did not.
4. His enthusiasm about getting to be a professional baseball player is a bit contagious. His attitude reflects that dream and just how lucky he is to get to do it. The pervasive positive attitude that Hunter has can only help him as he learns how to be adept at each level as well as adapt. Those will be the challenges he faces next year in each game.

When 2020 comes, I am not going to be surprised wherever he begins the season. I want to be surprised about what that Hunter Bigge looks like on the mound. It could be just a wrinkle or something big.
