Prospect Profile: Kevin Alcantara Looks to Be a Steal

Made from a pic by Rich Biesterfeld

It’s hard to do a prospect profile on a young outfielder who has a whopping two months of experience in minor league baseball. For one, there’s just not a lot of statistical data to sort through. And, two, you’re not going to get a lot of video. However, when it comes to Kevin Alcântara, everybody seems to be trying to get a video of him up as soon as possible.

Basic Info

Age: 18 yr

Height: 6-6

Weight: 188 lbs

Hits/Throws: R/R

Acquired: 2018 IFA

Rule V Eligible: 2022

The first thing you notice about Alcântara is he is very tall at 6-foot-6. The second thing that pops off the screen is that he is extremely athletic and just oozes talent. How quickly that talent comes together is going to be one of the more interesting things the next couple of years.

Right now, the Cubs are in an outfield renaissance. With Alcântara in that mix of possible guys, the Cubs are bursting at the seams with young outfielders. Not all of them are going to end up playing in Chicago as you can only have three. Still, Alcântara could be one of those three.

What he did well in the Arizona Complex League was to hit for average and to showcase some of his power potential. I have only seen a few videos of him and everything looks outstanding. When it comes to his swing. I really like the fact that the barrel stays in the zone a long time which is going to allow him to drive the ball to all parts of the ballpark.

Here is what some other people had to say about his talents. Prospects Live said:

Built like a younger Dexter Fowler, Alcantara now approaches 200 pounds and could have plus tools across the board once he fills out and gains more experience. His bat speed, projectable strength and leverage give him well above-average power from the right side of the plate and produce some of the highest exit velocities in the system. He made a reasonable amount of contact in his 2019 pro debut but will need to improve his discipline when he faces more advanced pitchers.

Marquee’s Sean Marshall even chimes in on his swing.

I’m excited to see him at Myrtle Beach next year. He’ll be all of 19 and working with Buddy Bailey. But he’ll also be in a park where the fly balls go to die. If you hit line drives in Myrtle Beach, the ball is going to go out of the ballpark. The way Alcantara barrels up the ball, I am hoping for good things. Maybe 15 to 20 home runs next year.

This year, he wound up hitting .345 between the Yankees and the Cubs with an OPS of 1.012. He hit 4 HRs with the Cubs and drove in 21 in 25 games as part of a potent lineup.

I’m going to be thrilled to see him as next year as the season is going to begin in April instead of May, unlike this year. That’s an extra month of Alcântara.

  1. Todd, for me this is the guy I am most excited about, via of all the returns in late July. The young man played CF and he is 6’6!! Really looking forward to seeing him at Myrtle in 2022. Kind of player you can dream on.

  2. I wonder whether Alcantara looks *as* good as he does due to repeating the level, which he did in 2019. It’s an interesting situation since he was 16 then and 18 now. We’ll know next year when he’s on a loaded full season roster
